Age is just a number

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Jamie Moyer was named the fifth starter in the Phillies rotation today. No, big deal right? Not quite, Jamie Moyer is 47 years old. That ladies and gentleman is old for professional baseball, Moyer has been jeered and made fun of for his velocity, with some saying his fastball couldn't break a window from ten feet away. Despite the skeptics, Jamie keeps coming back year after year and is succesful. Additionally, Jamie underwent 3 surgeries this off season on his knee, groin, and abdomen, and beat out 25 yr old Kyle Kendrick for the job. Moyer's longevity and success is astounding, and who knows how long he will continue to play. All we know is that age is merely a number to this southpaw, he blocks out the skeptics and stays focused on the task at hand, a lesson we all could learn.

March Madness

I love watching college basketball. The passion, the pride, and for me the punishment. You see for the last 7 eventful years ago I became fan of the Marquette Golden Eagles, changing my life forever. Ever hear of them? probably not. Well for those that havent, they play in the Big East Conference which is known and often heralded as the best conference in the Nation. They had an outstanding season after losing 4 seniors from the year before, and wound up receiving an at-large bid to play the Washington Huskies in the 1st round of the NCAA tournament. But before i get to that, I must mention that watching this team play is like not buckling your shoulder brace on a roller coaster. Almost every single game seems to come down to the last possession, and I never know if feelings of heartbreak or jubilation will follow. Marquette is known for playing hard and intense basketball and are vertically challenged not having a man over 6ft 6 actively playing on their roster. That's not a recipe for success in Division 1 basketball, yet through all ods they still win. The team is selfless and no ego exists, they know their role and do it. Now back to the game against Washington, it's a basically a shooting clinic in the 1st half, with each team virtually on fire from everywhere on the court. Marquette takes a 3 point lead into half, I exhale and, am decently pleased, yet cognizant of heartbreaking losses earlier in the year which temper my exuberance.
Second half, the Golden Eagles fly out of the gate ( pun intended) and open up a 15 point lead, sending me into a frenzy. But slowly the Huskies begin chipping away and that lead begins to dissipate. 30secs left what do you know the game is tied, and the Huskies have the ball. As each second pass, a part of me starts to erase with it, and then in happens, a Husky emerges from his slumber of holding the ball, killing precious time and heads towards the rim like a ravid beast. Literally time stands still as the Husky looks to deposit my ho,pe into the rim and end my teams season, and he does just that. Marquette loses 80-78 another familiar gut wrenching result. Do I quit being a fan? Do I find a more popular, better team? Do I give up on my boys? No my friend, I will not. Marquette is my team no matter what, because in every opportunity for heartbreak, their is also chance for joy. It's those moments of suspense and uncertainity that helps make one feel alive. In a few short months, the Golden Eagles will arise from the ashes and fly once again, and i'll be watching.

Hidden Treasure

Over the weekend I had the awesome opportunity to venture to Rickett's Glen State Park and go hiking with my Dad and brother. We had the most amazing time of bonding and adventure, as we traversed the various steep hills and trails, that led right to the mouth of numerous waterfalls. As we walked I kept thinking to myself, and seeing the wonder of God's creation, and how His artistry was evident all around. Our family has always been outdoors men, but hardly ever take advantage of treasures virtually in our backyard. It almost seemed liked an awakening happened in all of us, and our passions for the outdoors all came together at once. I can't wait to get back outdoors, and venture off to lands I've never been to. While I was out there, I really felt like one of the earliest explorers, charting out the land for the first time. I encourage anyone to give National Parks a try, break up the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and enjoy the comfort and relaxation the wilderness provides. Hiking is an inexpensive hobby anyone can get into, all you need is a good pair of boots, and and some initiative to get outside. PA is a beautiful state, with many hidden treasures, but you need to go to them they won't find you.

A Remarkable Run

Today in Westmoreland, New Hampshire the oldest certified person in the United States, Mary Joesephine Ray died at the incredible age of 114 and 294 days at a nursing home. Ms. Ray was the second oldest person in the entire world, Japan's Kama Chinen is 114 and 301 days. Joesphine Ray was born May 17th, 1895 in Bloomfield, Prince Edward Island Canada. Remarkably, Josephine was extremely active for her age, excitingly planning her next birthday party. We don't know how many years God will give us on the Earth, but regardless of the quantity of years, we need to make them quality years of service and love for Christ and his people. The article didn't go into her religious background but how awesome would it be to have 114 years of life to impact others and lead them to Christ, in whatever calling your life takes. Life is precious and we never know when were gonna go but all we know is that at the beginning of each day is full of opportunity. Are you making the most out of everyday God gives you?

Hello Spring!

Wow how beautilful was saturday, and how great was it to just be outside. The sun was shining, their wasn't a cloud in the sky accompanied by a cool breeze. It was a beautilful day for a baseball game, and I was able to play in two of them along with my fellow teamates as the 2010 LBC baseeball season got underway. We ventured to Carlisle PA to take on Dickinson College. We played hard but did not come out on top, but learned alot, and definately took a step in the right direction for a great season. Our games were actually the first time we were outdoors this year, so it was great to be outside where the games suppose to be played. As the season progressess, I encourage you to come out and cheer on our squad and enjoy Americas favorite past time.
