Tough as Nails

Ian Laperriere of the Flyers was voted the toughest player in the NHL by the Sporting News for the 2010 season, which should come as no surprise at all. This guy is truly remarkable how night in and night out Lappy put his body on the line without any regard for his personal well-being. He was willing to put his face in front of a puck to block a shot and preserve a victory, thats downright heroic. Heres a video that commemorates his reward enjoy ( Have tissues handy this is beautilful).

Signs of Life

Ok so the Flyers fell behind 3-0 in the best of 7 series making Game 4 a survival game, win and live to fight another day, lose and well lets not go there. So playing with their playoff lives on the lines the Flyers led a spirited attack against the Bruins and held a 3-2 lead heading into the 3rd period. Of course those pesky Bruins tied the game, at 3, Flyers went up 4-3 with little over 3 minutes to play in the game. Things were feeling good until 30 seconds left when the Bruins did the unthinkable and tied the game once again. I was truly feeling we were snake bitten and that overtime was an uncertainity. But the Flyers rose to the challenge and Simon Gagne scored ending Wachovia Arena into a frenzy. Gagne had triumphial returned to the lineup after missing the 1st three games due to a broken toe. The Flyers have life albeit not much but thye will lace them up on Monday Night and try to extend this series longer. I have faith that the fly guys will play well, hey anything is possible.

Judgemental Night

Ok so judgement night turned out absolutely terrible theFlyers fell to the Bruins 3-2 thus falling behind 2-0 in the best of seven series. The boys fought hard and gave it there all but in the end the Bruins basically stole this one away. The Bruins scored what all I can deem as a lucky goal with about 2 minutes left, ruining the Flyers bid at tying the series. O well not the end of the road hopefully they can go back home to philly and win the next 2.

Judgement Night

Tonight is big. The result of tonight's struggle will tell us allot about what will happen in the coming days. Do you know what tonight is? Other then Monday night smarty pants, it's game 2 of the Stanley Cup Eastern Conference Semifinals between our beloved Philadelphia Flyers and the Boston cubbies I mean Bruins. Why is this game so critical you ask? I'll tell you, the Flyers fell a little short and lost in overtime to the Bruins in Game 1 5-4. Tonight the Flyers need to right the tide and even this baby up 1-1. Falling behind 2-0 in a best of 7 series is a recipe for disaster. But i feel confident about tonight, Flyers were a bit rusty after having 9 days off between beating the Devils and Game 1 vs the Bruins, they're gonna bring the A game tonight. I like where Right Winger Danny Briere's head is at he said "I hope it goes at least 5 games now, we can win the next four". Yes Danny, love that spicy talk and confidence!! Kudos to you my friend and get the rest of the boys on board. I know the Carbomb is gonna go off in Game 2. So find a couch, futon or somewhere cozy and tune in at 7 PM for the Battle in Beantown!!

Simple as 1,2,3, A,B,B,A

OK confession time. I have a very unique taste in music. I'm a fan of um, well, yeah, ABBA, ok i said it that wasn't hard at all. There's just something so catchy and fun with all of their songs, that I just don't see or hear in today's music. In general, I'm not a big fan of pop music, instead I prefer the vintage stuff. Anyway, recently I had an awesome time visiting my lovely girlfriend and seeing an ABBA tribute band in concert with her. They were Swedish and basically as close to the real thing as you can get. From the hair, to the one piece jumpsuit (leotard?) costumes, finger dances, and amazing accents (urging the crowd to dance, and Patey (Party), we had a phenomenally fun night. I'm being downright serious, if you've never listened to ABBA, you gotta give those little Swedish meatballs a chance, you won't be disappointed. Listen enough and I guarantee you'll become your very own Dancing Queen (or King I suppose). So I'm sending out the SOS take a chance on ABBA, you'll be a winner and take it all!

Tick...Tick... Tick..Carbomb!!

O the time has come, to finally devote a blog to the man, the myth, the legendary monster Dan "Carbomb" Carcillo. Since arriving on Broad Street last year in a trade with the Phoenix Coyotes, Dan has captured the hearts and imagination of the Philadelphia faithful. With his aggresive, hair on fire playing style, crushing checks, and electyfying fights, Carcillo has become a fan and personal favorite. Danny in the beginning of his career had trouble staying out of the penalty box, accumulating 324 minutes. But like the catepillar transforming into a butterfly, Danny Boy to has undergone a transformation. He is currently on the Flyers top line, playing the role od hero in Game 3 by scoring the O.T winner. Lets not forget about his infamous mustache. That baby is majestic, if you don't dig it..... you're just jealous. Danny C is big time, making some serious noise right now that rivals the Liberty Bell. To all you out there, the time is now to embrace your destiny and join the Flyers. Why stay seated on the ground like a penguin, when you can tour the celestial skies with the Flyers. It's inevitable and to the Flyers 2nd round opponent, beware because you never know when the Carbomb is gonna go off!

Flying High

As you all probably know by now the Philadelphia Flyers made quick work of the New Jersey Devils winning the best of 7 series 4-1 in the opening round of the 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs. I personally never had a doubt in my mind that the Flyers win and despite injuries to top forwards Jeff Carter and Simon Gagne they silenced critics and beat the heavily favored Devils. Now the Flyers triumph in the 1st round was certainly a team effort, with the boys blocking 85 shots in the 5 games. But I want to focus in on one gentleman in particular. This man is selfless, fearless, relentless. This man is willing to literally block a puck with his face. Yes his face. This man is Ian Laperrier. With the final minutes of game 5 ticking away, and the Flyers with a comfortable 3-0 lead, Laperrier did the unthinkable and crouched down in front of a slap shot. The puck struck Laperrier above the right eye, needing over 60 stitches to close. Laperrier has been doing this type of thing his entire career, he is the ultimate team player and will do anything to win. His passion for his sport is ravenous, his determination never relinquished. Could you say the same for your life? Are you giving your all everyday? Are you willing to sacrifice everything even your health for what matters most?Lappy as he is called by his teammates is willing to give it all, can you follow his example. Here's a good read about the Lappy incident: http://www.csnphilly.com/04/22/10/Panaccio-Laperriere-Again-Shows-Toughnes/landing_v3.html?blockID=221579&feedID=5050

By George!

George Washington, First President, Great General, Patriot, library thief? According to New York Society Library, Georgy has 2 books out that were due Nov 2 1789!!! Now i'm no mathematician but that's quite an overdue fee. Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode when Jerry owes for a book taken out 25 yrs ago. So how about you what's the largest amount you owed the library? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100417/ap_on_fe_st/us_odd_george_washington_library_fines

Hometown

I hail from Sugarloaf, PA, the sweetest place on Earth. Not really. Bad joke but it's a really nice place to grow up and I love it. When telling others the name of my hometown I usually get jeers and laughs but is a solid conversation starter. It got me thinking, what are some other strange town names, and with a little research, I found a list from my friends at yahoo (I really don't have friends at yahoo, it's just my preferred search engine). For example, how about growing up in Truth or Consequence New Mexico,or Boring, Oregon? We all have a warm place in our heart for our hometown, no matter the name. Here's the rest of the list: http://travel.yahoo.com/p-interests-33863560

That's Random

A snail can sleep for three years, women blink twice as much as men, polar bears are left-handed, do you love random facts? This guys does. I absolutely love offbeat oddities, facts, and other trivia. I guess maybe it goes along with being in college and the continual gathering of new imformation. If you like random facts heres a site out of the many out there. Enjoy, tell some friends, spark up some raging conversations and debates. Impress your mom!http://www.indianchild.com/weird_information_humor.htm

Down to the Wire

It doesn't get better than this folks, Sunday afternoon last game of the year Flyers Vs. Rangers tied for the final playoff spot with 86 points, winner goes to the playoffs loser goes home and golf. Rangers score early and take a 1-0 lead all the way in to the 3rd period! Now granted the flyers have fired a barrage of pucks at Rangers goalie Henrik Lundquist saving all 40 shots. Yet that sweet goal was inevitable, and Matt Carle score 3 minutes into the 3rd tying the game. As the period unfolds, my brother and I watch in anxiously for a goal. Regulation ends, and its off to overtime. We beg our flyers to win the game in over time because of the vast uncertainty and unpredictability of shootouts, they don't oblige, off to the dreaded best of 3 shootout. Up first Danny Briere for the Flyers, saunters in boom goal! Jubilation in Peterson 103 C! First Ranger is then stopped, and the second flyer, 2nd Ranger scores, we become a little nervous again. 3rd flyer skates in and scores, and we erupt even more. Finally, the 3rd Ranger Jokinen skates in and is stopped!! Flyers win !!! Playoffs here we come!! Watch hockey it's exciting, it's thrilling, it's fun! The playoffs are even crazier and awesomer, not a word but it doesn't matter.
Go Flyers!!!

Age is just a number

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Jamie Moyer was named the fifth starter in the Phillies rotation today. No, big deal right? Not quite, Jamie Moyer is 47 years old. That ladies and gentleman is old for professional baseball, Moyer has been jeered and made fun of for his velocity, with some saying his fastball couldn't break a window from ten feet away. Despite the skeptics, Jamie keeps coming back year after year and is succesful. Additionally, Jamie underwent 3 surgeries this off season on his knee, groin, and abdomen, and beat out 25 yr old Kyle Kendrick for the job. Moyer's longevity and success is astounding, and who knows how long he will continue to play. All we know is that age is merely a number to this southpaw, he blocks out the skeptics and stays focused on the task at hand, a lesson we all could learn.

March Madness

I love watching college basketball. The passion, the pride, and for me the punishment. You see for the last 7 eventful years ago I became fan of the Marquette Golden Eagles, changing my life forever. Ever hear of them? probably not. Well for those that havent, they play in the Big East Conference which is known and often heralded as the best conference in the Nation. They had an outstanding season after losing 4 seniors from the year before, and wound up receiving an at-large bid to play the Washington Huskies in the 1st round of the NCAA tournament. But before i get to that, I must mention that watching this team play is like not buckling your shoulder brace on a roller coaster. Almost every single game seems to come down to the last possession, and I never know if feelings of heartbreak or jubilation will follow. Marquette is known for playing hard and intense basketball and are vertically challenged not having a man over 6ft 6 actively playing on their roster. That's not a recipe for success in Division 1 basketball, yet through all ods they still win. The team is selfless and no ego exists, they know their role and do it. Now back to the game against Washington, it's a basically a shooting clinic in the 1st half, with each team virtually on fire from everywhere on the court. Marquette takes a 3 point lead into half, I exhale and, am decently pleased, yet cognizant of heartbreaking losses earlier in the year which temper my exuberance.
Second half, the Golden Eagles fly out of the gate ( pun intended) and open up a 15 point lead, sending me into a frenzy. But slowly the Huskies begin chipping away and that lead begins to dissipate. 30secs left what do you know the game is tied, and the Huskies have the ball. As each second pass, a part of me starts to erase with it, and then in happens, a Husky emerges from his slumber of holding the ball, killing precious time and heads towards the rim like a ravid beast. Literally time stands still as the Husky looks to deposit my ho,pe into the rim and end my teams season, and he does just that. Marquette loses 80-78 another familiar gut wrenching result. Do I quit being a fan? Do I find a more popular, better team? Do I give up on my boys? No my friend, I will not. Marquette is my team no matter what, because in every opportunity for heartbreak, their is also chance for joy. It's those moments of suspense and uncertainity that helps make one feel alive. In a few short months, the Golden Eagles will arise from the ashes and fly once again, and i'll be watching.

Hidden Treasure

Over the weekend I had the awesome opportunity to venture to Rickett's Glen State Park and go hiking with my Dad and brother. We had the most amazing time of bonding and adventure, as we traversed the various steep hills and trails, that led right to the mouth of numerous waterfalls. As we walked I kept thinking to myself, and seeing the wonder of God's creation, and how His artistry was evident all around. Our family has always been outdoors men, but hardly ever take advantage of treasures virtually in our backyard. It almost seemed liked an awakening happened in all of us, and our passions for the outdoors all came together at once. I can't wait to get back outdoors, and venture off to lands I've never been to. While I was out there, I really felt like one of the earliest explorers, charting out the land for the first time. I encourage anyone to give National Parks a try, break up the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and enjoy the comfort and relaxation the wilderness provides. Hiking is an inexpensive hobby anyone can get into, all you need is a good pair of boots, and and some initiative to get outside. PA is a beautiful state, with many hidden treasures, but you need to go to them they won't find you.

A Remarkable Run

Today in Westmoreland, New Hampshire the oldest certified person in the United States, Mary Joesephine Ray died at the incredible age of 114 and 294 days at a nursing home. Ms. Ray was the second oldest person in the entire world, Japan's Kama Chinen is 114 and 301 days. Joesphine Ray was born May 17th, 1895 in Bloomfield, Prince Edward Island Canada. Remarkably, Josephine was extremely active for her age, excitingly planning her next birthday party. We don't know how many years God will give us on the Earth, but regardless of the quantity of years, we need to make them quality years of service and love for Christ and his people. The article didn't go into her religious background but how awesome would it be to have 114 years of life to impact others and lead them to Christ, in whatever calling your life takes. Life is precious and we never know when were gonna go but all we know is that at the beginning of each day is full of opportunity. Are you making the most out of everyday God gives you?

Hello Spring!

Wow how beautilful was saturday, and how great was it to just be outside. The sun was shining, their wasn't a cloud in the sky accompanied by a cool breeze. It was a beautilful day for a baseball game, and I was able to play in two of them along with my fellow teamates as the 2010 LBC baseeball season got underway. We ventured to Carlisle PA to take on Dickinson College. We played hard but did not come out on top, but learned alot, and definately took a step in the right direction for a great season. Our games were actually the first time we were outdoors this year, so it was great to be outside where the games suppose to be played. As the season progressess, I encourage you to come out and cheer on our squad and enjoy Americas favorite past time.

Courage Under Fire

I came across a horrific article today about a school shooting that occured yesterday in Colorado, eerily 3 miles away from where the Columbine masacre happened 11 years ago. A 32 year old gunman was walking through the parking lot of Deer Creek Middle School firing at students with a hunting rifle injuring two students in the process. Before he had time to inflict any more damage, middle school math teacher David Benke sprung into action and tackled the assailant to the ground, thwarting any chances for more damage. Luckily, the two students wounded survived the shooting, one remains hospitalized. This article brings to light two crucial concepts. One, that school safety is far from being a perfected science, and that everyday breeds the opportunity for disaster to happen. We truly live in a fallen world, filled with terrible suffering that occurs when people decide to act wickedly. The second is that the role of a teacher is definitely multidimensional, and may provide the opportunity to not only mold students lives, but save them. Mr. Benke did an extremely noble, and courageous act by putting his life on the line to save others. Fortunately, he was successful in his attempt at subduing the gunman, and all lives were spared. So when disaster strikes, are you a person of action or not, are you willing to put your livelihood in jeopardy to save another?

Gotta love the Underdog

Last nights Olympic Hockey game between the USA and Canada was awesome to watch, passion and raw emotion was clearly on display and each team played at incredibly high level. The game was pitched as the ultimate showdown a young and up-in coming USA team vs the Olympic hosting, experienced, talented Canadians. This was truly a David vs. Goliath matchup, with David like Daniel being in the perverbial lions den that was Vancouver Canada. Yet, the USA bold like David, charged right into battle and earned a hard fought 5-3 upset victory over their neighbors to the North. USA forward Patrick Kane said " We've come a long way and coming into this tournament we were probably considered underdogs but we have a good team and and a good mix of players". Canada who before the tournament was considered the favorite for Gold is now 1 loss away from being out of medal contention, whereas USA is surpassing expectations. This team is drawing comparisons to the up start 1980's squad who shocked the world with the "Miracle on Ice" by beating the USSR and eventually winning gold. In both circumstances, USA teams were young and lacked experience. This is true in our own lives, that no matter what age we are, we can still do great things, if we rely on God for strength and guidance. So theres still time to jump on the bandwagon and cheer on the mother land. As a life long hockey fan, I can attest to the awesomness of the game of hockey, give it a try. Hopefully, this USA team can keep the magic going and prove that miracles still happen today. What do you think do they have what it takes for Gold?

Indy Rocks

If you were expecting this to be a post where I divulge and expose my hardcore love for the genre of indy rock, i'm sorry to dissapoint but that is not nearly the case. Instead I want to take time to talk about the greatest trilogy ever and quite possible best character of all time none other then the wip crackin, fedora wearing, archaelogist/professor Indiana Jones. This blog really serves two purposes : (1) If you have been so utterly deprived and have not seen any of the Indy movies, it's time to get out from under your rock and live a little. Secondly the Indy movies flat out bring people together. People use monkey brains as joke material on a consistent basis. I've never ran into a person who did not like the movies, and the movies always are great conversation starters. The theme o my gracious is just phenomenal it just stirs up such wondeful emotions in me, and brings smile to anyones face. Indiana Jones just lives the coolest life half archaelogist, half professor, 100% man. As a kid it had me digging in my backyard for hours in search of the Lost Ark. I encourage you to throw on your imaginary leather jacket and enter the wild world of indiana jones, you won't be dissapointed. My favorite one is the Last Crusade, what's yours?

Break a Mental Sweat

Many options exist for us to stay physically fit: lifting weights, running, biking, swimming, sports etc. It's fairly easy to tell when we have slumped on our workouts and are in need to break a solid sweat and release some endorphins. But how often do we take the time to sharpen our mind and as the addage goes "break a mental sweat". For me, I love to do crosswords, yup thats right crosswords I said it I do crosswords, there not just for grown ups everyone should partake in the wonderful phenomenon thats is the crossword. Crosswords are a great oportunity to retrieve previous facts stored in memory, as well as insert new imformation. I do most of my crosswords online through yahoo at games.yahoo.com/word games, where they provide 3 different types of crosswords for all different skill levels. So no excuses about crosswords being to difficult, one of the versions even give hints. What I really suggest is doing the crossword with another person, that's what really makes the experience fun; working as a team leads to the satisfying feeling of conquering a crossword. Crosswords are a great stress breaker and fun maker, so go out there and show a crossword who's boss!

Super Bowl Sunday: I feel a cool Brees!!

The day has finally arrived Super Bowl Sunday and this should a very good game with two outstanding QBS going at it, Drew Brees and Peyton Manning.I'm rooting for the Saints to come out on top 38-35. Drew Brees statistically and arguably has been the best quarterback in the league over the past 3 years, despite lacking ideal height (6ft) and arm strength. In fact, his lack of arm strength is what made many teams pass on in him, feeling he was too much of a risk, but the Saints were willing to go all in and take the gamble, and wow what a reward. Although Drew may not look the part, is work ethic and leadership is unparrelled. Yet most importantly, Drew Brees is a follower of Christ and attributes all of his success to Christ. It's awesome to see a man at the top of the sports world being salt and light. In a recent Sports Spectrum interview Drew said "I see God's hand in everything that happens in life, God does things to strengthen us". Well I hope everyone enjoys the game!

Road Less Traveled

Something i find extremely amusing is the way food is arranged in my dining hall, especially the dessert table. The dessert table is ironically situated next to his polar opposities the fruit basket and the flavored water dispensers. Here we see a true clash of the titans kind of showdown which pits man against his conscience, well being, and health. After the meal is over the real fun starts, and it's time to make a descision. This is no easy descision because based on which course is chosen drastic diffrences will ensue. I must add that it's really not a fair fight, the dining crew does a tremndous job of providing a vast array of delicous delectables hearty enough for even the most diehard sweet tooth. On the contrary, the David to the dessert's Goliath, lie crowded on top of one another, virtually safe from the onslaught of passer byes. One provides immediate satisfaction, the other lasting benefits. One gets you hooked right away, the other takes time getting used to. One is very popular, the other is only followed by a few. Yet the opportunities exist for individuals to sway on both camps. Doesn't this sound a lot like choosing to live a life for God or not? We love immediate gratification, like those provided by sweets and sin, but are never truly satisfied. Bad choices seemingly always outweigh the good. Living for God is not all that popular or easy but the greater gain down the road is worth it. Sin always starts small just like 1 cookie becomes 2,3,5,6. When we choose God, we tap into the ultimate living water and the fruits of the spirit. Our peers play a big role in developing either lifestyle, or changing from one to another. The dessert tables of life will always exist, but so will God's fulfilling basket of fruit. We either get hooked to sin or hooked to God, developing habits along the way. So give the road less traveled a try, your waistline and soul will thank you.

Hey Baldy!

Respect your elders. On the surface it seems like a simple, innocuous task but in reality it's quite difficult to put in practice. For starters it involves getting over the stereotype that the elderly are intellectually deficient, out of touch with reality, and socially inadequate. It takes a leap of faith into the realm of the unknown and uncomfortable, it could be uncomfortable. With age comes life experience which leads to the accumulation of invaluable wisdom. Elderly who are Godly are even more of a treasure ans should be revered. This is clearly evident in a bizarre passage I came across today in 2 Kings 2:23-25. http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20kings%202&version=NIV
We clearly see what happens when we disrespect elderly Godly men. Now in this day and age something as extreme as that wouldnt take place, but it's the principle here that matters. Rejecting the Word of God brings serious consequences to our lives. It may not be an attack by bears ,instead a slow degeneration away from God which will eventually lead to spiritual death. Elisha was a prophet sent by God, to set the people of Bethel (Center of Idolatry) straight. These lads decided to mock God's messenger and were wiped out. We must take advantage of the people God places in our lives, regardless of their age. In my life I've been extremely blessed and encouraged by elderly men of God. So save the insults, some of these geezers are actually great. Just give them a chance, or watch out for wildlife!

Soul Searching

How do you determine the goodness of a person? Do you even evaluate the character of the people you most often pal around with or are you happy as long as there is no tension? Is goodness based on appearance or reputation? I believe the term good is so loosely thrown around this day and age; we merely believe what our eyes tell us. Too often we allow pre conceived notions and presuppositions gauge our view of a person. I think you need to strip a person down to their core values, their inmost being to see what they really stand for. Traumatic events sometimes peel back the façade and expose true character. That moment of chilling, brutal honesty is evident in a favorite short story of mine “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, by Flannery O’Connor. This story really rattled my cage, forcing me to take a look at my own values. I encourage you to read this story it’s linked below; what in the story was most significant to you? Feedback is greatly appreciated and encouraged!

An Exquisite Exposition

Blogging is something I really never gave much thought to, an endeavor I never thought I would ever undertake, but that all changed when I was given an assignment in my Writing for Publication course to make my very own blog. My professor is giving us the liberty to write at least 2x a week on anything we like and I’ve decided to utilize this opportunity to share my insights, views on life and various forms of pop culture. I aim to highlight the joys and passions of being a fan of Philadelphia sports teams. Discuss wonderful treasures of movies starring Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Christian Bale and others. Venture into the world of classic and contemporary literature. Expose the highs and lows of my internship at a middle school this semester. My love for the outdoors, and my weird, eclectic, random music taste
Notably, the title of my blog is derived from a favorite verse of mine Joshua 1:9 in which God instructs Joshua, the newly elected leader of the Israelites to “Be strong and courageous, do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go”! That verse has been so powerful in my life, whenever I have fears or doubts; I know that God is with me through it all. We live in a fallen world filled with suffering and pain, but there’s comfort in knowing were not alone in this fight. I feel this world needs leaders who stick to their morals and make a true stand for what they believe in. Young people need good role models to emulate and follow after, and that’s who I want to be. I want this blog to be interactive, dynamic and most of all a fun place to talk about interesting topics. So here goes nothing, no turning back, this marks my epic saga into the perilous world that is cyberspace on the planet Blog.
